JEB Stuart High School

Page history last edited by Svetlana 13 years, 5 months ago

J.E.B. Stuart High School was founded in 1959 as a public school within Fairfax County Public Schools. The school was named after the famous confederate cavalry leader, J.E.B. Stuart and was given the "Raiders" as their team mascot with colors of red, white and navy blue. In 2001, National Geographic Magazine ran a cover story focusing on the changing demographics at Stuart and why the racial barrier is not an issue. In 2004, President George W. Bush chose Stuart as a place to speak about education and how Stuart is a place that is improving the educational boundaries.

The mission of J.E.B. Stuart High School's Professional School Counseling Program is to provide a curriculum addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status.

About 15 years ago according to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004), a federal law governing the education of students with disabilities, J.E.B. Stuart High school introduced inclusive education into the teaching process. There are 1700 students in there and about 300 students are those with special needs. Each of these students has an I.E.P. (individualized education program). There are a lot of aspects in this program like personal information (name, age, interests, hobbies etc.), students' plans and ambitions, some pages for teachers who are given special description of a child's disability. Teachers are supposed to make a quarterly reports about a student's progress and abilities. All this information is electronic and confidential. Teachers are provided with special equipment for their classrooms and for special students' needs. For example, if a child has problems with hearing a teacher should use a microphone  for him to be able to listen to what the teacher's saying.

As one of my goals is to learn more about inclusive education in the USA and start working in this field in my home country I'd like to mention that it's possible for me as a teacher to do it in my English classes. My partner teacher Ms Whitesell and I set up a plan to implement this goal. First, I should start to talk to my students about the importance of this issue. Then I may organize the meeting of a student with limited abilities with my students in my class and involve him/her into the studying process. The most important thing is to give disabled students the chance to socialize.

This presentation has been done to be introduced to American students. It is about Russia, Kalmykia, Elista and the Lyceum of Education for Gifted Children where I am working now. I wanted to highlight the differences and similarities between two cultures. I was pleased to see that J.E.B. Stuart High School students got interested in my presentation. They asked a lot of questions about Russia, Moscow, politics (the President of Russia and the leading party), young generation (their hobbies and ambitions) and higher education in Russia.

Thank to our partner-teachers we got a lot of experience, met American colleagues and students. the teachers shared a lot of teaching material which you may see and read if you click here. a)How to Read A Text.doc , b) Power-Point Presentation on Famous People (Barack Obama)
